Child Rescue is Educating Law Enforcement on Human Trafficking

Human trafficking is the buying and selling of human beings. It is the world's fastest growing form of organized crime and is expected to surpass the sale of illegal drugs in terms of net profit in the very near future. The most common form of trafficking is sexual exploitation. Every year, thousands of North American children are exploited, most commonly for prostitution.

As a leader in the fight against child trafficking, Child Rescue is taking action to educate law enforcement in the US and Canada with a FREE nationwide training event.

    Brennan Martin

My name is Brennan Martin and I hold the rank of Constable with the Calgary Police Service (CPS). I have been employed by the CPS since April 2003 and have completed eight (8) years of service. My first six and a half years (6 ½) I was a assigned to general duties in a marked Police Vehicle and the last two and a half (2 ½) years I have been assigned to the Alberta Law Enforcement Teams Green Team South (ALERT/GTS) whose mandate is the investigation of illegal marihuana cultivation operations in southern Alberta. I have attended over one hundred and seventy (170+) marihuana growing operations. My duties include surveillance, writing warrants and exhibit collection.

GTS investigations have resulted in arrests where the person(s) who tend to the operation have been brought from other countries. It is believed in some cases, the person(s) come to Canada under the pretense of a new future but end up working in the marihuana growing operations. The conference would help me better understand human trafficking and how it may relate to the investigation of marihuana growing operations.

    Tanya Hopping

I am Constable Tanya Hopping, a member of the Alberta Law Enforcement Teams - Green Team South. I have been a police officer for just over 4 ½ years and have spent the last year and a half working as a part of the Green Team investigating Marihuana Grow Operations. I have attended over 130 Marihuana Grow Operations in Alberta, Canada. Being an investigator with the Green Team has opened my eyes to the benefits of training in regards to human trafficking. There have been cases where those employed to tend to the marihuana grow operations, commonly know as “crop sitters”, have been lured into Canada, being promised a better life and a chance to eventually bring their families over, but they are being victimized as they are being put to work in these illegal environments. I think that training in human trafficking would be extremely beneficial to the role I have as an investigator, and as being a part of a team where I can pass this type of knowledge on.

    Colin McLachlan

My name is Colin McLachlan and I am a detective with the Vancouver Police Department. I have been a member of the VPD for nine years the past two of which have been spent in the Vice Unit. The mandate of the Vice Unit includes prostitution offences and human trafficking both domestic and international. As Vancouver is an international city with strong ties to Asia and is considered a gateway to North America, the issue of human trafficking is of great concern and focus for myself and my colleagues.

During my time in the Vice unit, I have been involved in numerous cases involving the trafficking of persons who have been the victims of exploitation in the sex trade and domestic servitude. As well, protecting children from becoming victims of trafficking and being exploited in the sex trade is the highest priority of the unit. I believe that this conference and its material would be of great benefit to me as an investigator.
