$1 Million Donation by Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone Wednesday Sets New Record for Donations Raised at Charity Poker Tournament

Sumner Redstone presents $1 million check

The following is a transcript of the speech given by Sumner Redstone as he presented the record-breaking check for $1 million dollars to Lindsay Hadley of the Child Rescue Association at the Poker Night fundrasing event, in Bell Gardens, Ca November 3rd, 2010.

Thank you and good evening.

I am more than happy to be here to host this very special event in the support of the extraordinary work carried on by Child Rescue, work that is essential to protect our society and our children.

In the course of events that will take place this night, we are going to see some great poker being played…led by our co-hosts, Annie Duke and Howard Lederer, two of the world’s most foremost card players.

I have great admiration for the intelligence and strategic insight that goes into a well-played hand. I know from my experience that negotiating a successful business deal is a game that requires nerves of steel and an ability to play well with what ever cards that you are dealt.... and to come out a winner.

Along with our fun and enjoyment, let’s not forget the principal reason we are here…and that is to support the great work done everyday by Child Rescue Association of North America.

It is startling to think that every year, more than 300,000 American children fall prey to human trafficking. Child Rescue is devoted to combating child slavery. It is devoted to rescuing these children with the ultimate goal of eliminating child trafficking in the U.S. and Canada.

Events such as this evening’s gala help us raise awareness about this despicable crime, which has no place in society that values and respects human life. Events such as these generate much needed funding for the people on the front lines….the individuals and tasks forces who are fighting this war- and make no mistake: this is a war. Yes, This is a war that we are carrying on for our children’s safety from predators.

Like many of you, I knew little of the shocking prevalence of slavery and exploitation around the world—and even less about the enormity of the issue right here in this country. I was enlightened by my good friend Malia Andelin, who is here tonight. She, like so many others, has been tireless in raising awareness about the issue, and in supporting the essential work of Child Rescue.

I strongly urge all of you who are here tonight to assist Child Rescue in carrying out its mission of ending oppression and reclaiming the most essential of all human rights. We must congratulate Child Rescue for its extraordinary work in eliminating this horrible activity.

In recognition of our passion for Child Rescue and its vital work and as an indication of my determination that I must do what I can to help end this horrific abuse and in hope that others will follow in my footsteps….it gives me great pleasure to hand over my check for $1 million dollars to Child Rescue Association of North America.

And now , enough with the speeches….lets start dealing…and play some poker!

Thanks to all the participants in the 2010 first annual, Candlelight Serenade Acoustic Festival.

Because of our generous volunteers, supporters, and sponsors we were able to raise funds for local victim services and our other Utah non-profit partners. The most impressive success of Candlelight Serenade was the overall awareness that was generated for this cause. Through our efforts in promoting the concert hundreds of thousands heard about Child Rescue and our efforts.

At Child Rescue we believe that you can accomplish anything if you do not care who gets the credit. Consequently, we invited other non profit partners to our "Charity Circle/Exhibit" at the event which featured our collaborative efforts to protect children and hopefully educated our participants as well as promote all the successful efforts other groups are doing about this issue. We had remarkable speakers ranging from The documentary Playground's director Libby Spears, our law enforcement specialist Marc Evans LAPD, Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff, to an actual child trafficking survivor Amanda Bonella. Beautiful unique acoustic music, an educational program, over 90 vendors and activities of all kinds were just a few of the reasons people called Candlelight Serenade, "Epic" and "Moving"! The highlight of the evening was when each participant received a candle, donated by Candle Impressions, and sang along to our Child Rescue theme song, "Light in the Dark" written by John Allred. Each candle represented a victim of child trafficking and how all of us can act as a light in the dark for those who need us.
